Co-ed Scripture Study

The Bible and the Virgin MaryThe Bible and the Virgin Mary

Journey Through Scripture is the St. Paul Center’s dynamic Bible study program designed to help ordinary Catholics grow in their knowledge of the Scriptures while deepening their understanding of the riches of our faith. Distinctively Catholic, Journey Through Scripture reads the Bible from the heart of the Church, engaging both the Old and New Testaments and how they work together. It’s grounded in history, yet actively engages topics faced by today’s Catholic. More than just an ordinary Bible study, it’s biblical catechesis.

The Bible and the Virgin Mary is a dynamic twelve-part video series that beautifully explains the Catholic truths about Our Lady showing how she has been a part of God’s plan to bring salvation to the world since the beginning of time. In addition to explanation of dogmas, answers to common objections, and demonstration of Mary’s presence in the Old and New Testaments, this study discusses Church-approved Marian apparitions that play an important role in Catholic Tradition. It’s sure to help Catholics and non-Catholics alike grow in an understanding and appreciation of the Mother of God.

How does it work?

This is a 12-part study taking place during the fall of 2016. Participants meet weekly to pray, share the fruits of their study at home, read the Word of God, and watch Jeff Cavin’s exciting video lectures. Throughout the week the lesson keeps one engaged in Scripture at home, and on Monday evening the discussion and faith-sharing help the participants grow more fully into the Body of Christ.

When: Mondays, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm, starting September 19, 2016.

Where: Conference Center

Cost:  See below.

Great Adventure Scripture Study

Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom

acts-starter_packStep Three in The Great Adventure Bible Study Program, Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom, builds on The Bible Timeline and Matthew by showing how Christ’s Kingdom on earth is empowered to carry out his work in the world. The book of Acts shows the Church, enlivened by the Holy Spirit, teaching, preaching, healing, and restoring outcasts in the same way that Jesus did on earth.

The Acts of the Apostles provides an historic framework for understanding the rest of the New Testament. Paul’s letters in particular come alive in a new way when they are read within the context of the Acts narrative.

Your Group Will:

  • See how the Gospel witness spread outward in waves, from Jerusalem to Judea and Samaria, and finally to the ends of the earth.
  • Share with the early Christians the joys and struggles of living the life of Christ, and learn how these apply to us today.
  • See how the Holy Spirit guided the apostles into Truth.
  • Observe the way the Spirit-filled Church adapted to new cultures when proclaiming the Gospel.
  • Watch the seeds of Church structure and authority take root,  and see how conflicts were resolved even at that early stage.
  • See your place in Christ’s Church, and how you should live day-to-day as a disciple of Christ.

How does it work?

This is a 20-part study spanning the fall of 2016 and the spring of 2017 semesters.

When: Mondays, 7:00 – 9:00 pm, starting October 3, 2016.  Note:  this is a new date. The old date was September 19th.

Where:  Room 1 of the school

Cost:  $29 + shipping

33 Days to Morning Glory: Preparation for Marian Consecration

September 6 – October 11, 2017

Prepare to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima by Making this Consecration!

33 days

Want to transform your work, your marriage, your family, and your life, but don’t have time?

Looking for the quickest, surest, and easiest way to holiness, but don’t know where to begin? In our hectic day and time, Saint John Paul II and Blessed Mother Teresa knew that the quickest way to be transformed into a saint is through a relationship with Our Blessed Mother, Mary.

Join us on September 6, 2017 as we begin a 33-day preparation for Marian Consecration, which will take place on October 13, 2017, the hundredth anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady of Fatima!

For six weeks, we’ll read about and reflect on four Marian giants: St. Louis de Montfort, St. Maximilian Kolbe, Blessed Mother Teresa, and Saint John Paul II. They’ll teach us the secrets to drawing closer to the Heart of Jesus through the Heart of Mary. In our weekly meetings, we’ll share our insights within a small group and watch a 30-minute video. The video by popular author and speaker, Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC, brings our individual reflections and group experience into a clear and live-able focus.

If you’ve already made your consecration, St. Louis de Montfort recommends repeating the 33-day preparation and renewing your Consecration every year.  If you don’t want to take 33 Days to Morning Glory again, I recommend reading True Devotion to Mary, the original work by St. Louis de Montfort, and then using one of the following books as your guide to preparing for your renewal

When:  This course will be offered at two different times:

  • Wednesday mornings, 9:30 am – 11:00 am
  • Wednesday evenings, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

The “One Thing” Is Three: How the Most Holy Trinity Explains Everything
Dates TBD

one thing is three - revisedWith humor and ease, Father Michael Gaitley, MIC, deftly unlocks the “one thing,” the key to the Church’s wisdom, and the greatest mystery of the Catholic faith: the Most Holy Trinity. Far from being a scholarly or academic read, The “One Thing” is Three makes deep theology accessible to every-day Catholics. What’s more, it makes even what’s familiar or forgotten appear in a way that’s new, exciting, and relevant. Thus, The “One Thing” is Three brings its readers a unique and powerful experience of the faith.

Warning: This book is dangerous. It brims with wisdom and wonder, and with enthusiastic and infectious joy. If you want to preserve your comfortable categories and ideological classifications of Catholicism as either “liberal” or “conservative,” don’t read this book. It will turn your prejudices inside out and upside down.

Imagine John Paul II writing a book on all the mysteries of Catholic theology in a simpler style than he ever used before. You’ve imagined this book. This is the very best example I have ever seen of “the new evangelization” in the form of a book for contemporary Catholics. It covers just about everything, yet slowly and clearly. If you wonder what God is doing in the Church today to convert and convince the modern world, read this book. It’s an amazing achievement: it’s simple enough for beginners and profound enough for professionals.

If you think the Church’s teachings are unintelligible, outdated, impersonal, boring, repressive, platitudinous, impractical, or irrelevant; if you think that theology makes no difference to the energy and joy with which you live your daily life; if you think Vatican II was a mistake; if you think John Paul II was not the greatest man of the 20th century; if you think the Church’s old dogmas, like the Trinity and practices like Marian devotion and Eucharistic Adoration, are “out of touch” with the modern world and modern youth; then this is the very best book for you. It will turn your myopia inside out.

Adult Education Forum:

Applying Our Faith to Contemporary Issues

What is the perspective of the Catholic Church when applied to the urgent issues that face us today?  If we do not form our consciences according to the mind of the Church–and thereby by the mind of Christ, the Head of the Church–then we are liable to be influenced by a secular media whose values are increasingly hostile to those of Christ.  We need to be armed with the Truth, then, if we are to make a difference in our society and help bring Christ to a world which is more and more in darkness.

The following program has been put together to provide just such a perspective.  Twelve important issues have been selected, and the goal is to provide an overview of these issues from a Catholic perspective.  Many of these issues have to do with politics, or have political ramifications, and that is no accident.  Too often we let our politics shape our faith–instead of letting our faith shape our politics.

Light refreshments will be provided!

When:

There are two times to pick from:

  • Sunday mornings, 10:15 – 10:45 a.m. (with an optional discussion afterward for those not leaving to attend the 11:00 a.m. Mass)
  • Wednesday evenings, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.

Where:

Generally in the Conference Center  (see below for more details)

Who:

Rich May and Deacon Bob Hebert are the presenters

deacon bobRich May has a B.A. and M.A. in theology and speaks throughout the U.S. at conferences, retreats, & parish missions, and has appeared on EWTN & Catholic Radio. Deacon Bob, an inspirational speaker, serves here at St. Clare’s and will add depth to the discussion.
