Summer 2017

Catholicism: The Pivotal Players

Pivotal Players ImageJoin us this summer for a fascinating look into six of the most influential figures in the history of the Church. CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players, showcases a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of western civilization:

  • St. Francis of Assisi, the Reformer, radically and literally lived as Jesus commanded to transform the Church.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas, the Theologian, demonstrated that faith and reason at not at odds, as they come from the same source.
  • St. Catherine of Siena, the Mystic, gave testimony to the reality of the spiritual dimension here and beyond.
  • Bl. John Henry Newman, the Convert, left a prestigious career to seek and preach the apostolic faith.
  • G.K. Chesterton, the Evangelist, publicly, humbly, and humorously announced the paradoxes and truth of Christianity.
  • Michelangelo, the Artist, dramatically demonstrated that beauty and creativity are a primary route of access to God.

This series, though, is more than academic!  Filmed on location across the world, we’ll discover the places where St. Thomas Aquinas lived, learned, and wrote; visit the countryside where St. Francis gathered a group of friars and revived the Church; see the places where St. Catherine of Siena ministered and prayed; trek through England to where Bl. John Henry Newman and G.K. Chesterton left their mark and sparked an English Catholic revival; and through unprecedented HD footage, marvel at the extraordinary art of Michelangelo, from his David statue in Florence, to the Pietà at St. Peter’s, to the Sistine Chapel.

Materials

There are two ways to order the Study Guide:

  • Order through the parish, in order to get the parish discount, less expensive shipping, and a possible bulk discount.  Here is how it will work. There are two deadlines:
    • By noon on Thursday, June 1st:  contact John Kovacs in the parish office with your commitment to purchase the Study Guide through the parish.  Shortly after noon on that day, John Kovacs will contact all such persons and let them know what the final cost will be, taking into account any bulk discounts and the less expensive shipping.   For example, if 30 people order the Study Guide, the grand total will be $20.48/person.  (Compare this to the $34.70 it will cost to order on your own directly from WordOnFire.org.)
    • By noon on Monday, June 5th:  drop off your payment of the above amount to the parish office, after which time the study guides will be ordered.  They should arrive within 3-4 days and will be distributed at the first session on June 13th.
  • Or, order on your own:  online at WordOnFire.org, or on Amazon (with its own shipping costs). Look for the “Catholicism Pivotal Players Study Guide”.

33 Days to Morning Glory: Preparation for Marian Consecration

September 6 – October 11, 2017

Prepare to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima by Making this Consecration!

33 days

Want to transform your work, your marriage, your family, and your life, but don’t have time?

Looking for the quickest, surest, and easiest way to holiness, but don’t know where to begin? In our hectic day and time, Saint John Paul II and Blessed Mother Teresa knew that the quickest way to be transformed into a saint is through a relationship with Our Blessed Mother, Mary.

Join us on September 6, 2017 as we begin a 33-day preparation for Marian Consecration, which will take place on October 13, 2017, the hundredth anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady of Fatima!

For six weeks, we’ll read about and reflect on four Marian giants: St. Louis de Montfort, St. Maximilian Kolbe, Blessed Mother Teresa, and Saint John Paul II. They’ll teach us the secrets to drawing closer to the Heart of Jesus through the Heart of Mary. In our weekly meetings, we’ll share our insights within a small group and watch a 30-minute video. The video by popular author and speaker, Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC, brings our individual reflections and group experience into a clear and live-able focus.

If you’ve already made your consecration, St. Louis de Montfort recommends repeating the 33-day preparation and renewing your Consecration every year.  If you don’t want to take 33 Days to Morning Glory again, I recommend reading True Devotion to Mary, the original work by St. Louis de Montfort, and then using one of the following books as your guide to preparing for your renewal

  • Wednesday mornings, 9:30 am – 11:00 am
  • Wednesday evenings, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

The “One Thing” Is Three: How the Most Holy Trinity Explains Everything
Dates TBD

one thing is three - revisedWith humor and ease, Father Michael Gaitley, MIC, deftly unlocks the “one thing,” the key to the Church’s wisdom, and the greatest mystery of the Catholic faith: the Most Holy Trinity. Far from being a scholarly or academic read, The “One Thing” is Three makes deep theology accessible to every-day Catholics. What’s more, it makes even what’s familiar or forgotten appear in a way that’s new, exciting, and relevant. Thus, The “One Thing” is Three brings its readers a unique and powerful experience of the faith.

Warning: This book is dangerous. It brims with wisdom and wonder, and with enthusiastic and infectious joy. If you want to preserve your comfortable categories and ideological classifications of Catholicism as either “liberal” or “conservative,” don’t read this book. It will turn your prejudices inside out and upside down.

Imagine John Paul II writing a book on all the mysteries of Catholic theology in a simpler style than he ever used before. You’ve imagined this book. This is the very best example I have ever seen of “the new evangelization” in the form of a book for contemporary Catholics. It covers just about everything, yet slowly and clearly. If you wonder what God is doing in the Church today to convert and convince the modern world, read this book. It’s an amazing achievement: it’s simple enough for beginners and profound enough for professionals.

If you think the Church’s teachings are unintelligible, outdated, impersonal, boring, repressive, platitudinous, impractical, or irrelevant; if you think that theology makes no difference to the energy and joy with which you live your daily life; if you think Vatican II was a mistake; if you think John Paul II was not the greatest man of the 20th century; if you think the Church’s old dogmas, like the Trinity and practices like Marian devotion and Eucharistic Adoration, are “out of touch” with the modern world and modern youth; then this is the very best book for you. It will turn your myopia inside out.

Walking Toward Eternity

Dates TBD

walking_towards_eternity_bundleIs it time for a change? Walking Toward Eternity is an inspiring series designed to help you live your faith more fully by developing and nurturing characteristics that are essential to the Christian life. Through daily prayer and meditation with Scripture, you will be drawn into an intimate and life-changing encounter with Christ.

As you prayerfully reflect on God’s Word, you will begin to hear the subtle ways God is speaking to you, and you will be challenged to set aside those things in your life that keep you from growing closer to him. By putting the fruits of your study into practice, you will be able to make real changes in your life, changes that will make you more like the person God created you to be. Daring to Walk the Walk, the first series of Walking Toward Eternity, introduces seven key virtues and outlines practical steps for living them out in your life:

  • Love
  • Forgiveness
  • Humility
  • Prayerfulness
  • Faithfulness
  • Sacrifice
  • Thankfulness

When: Sundays, 10:30 am – 12:15 pm, June 11 to July 30, 2016

Note:  The class has been canceled due to lack of registrations.  If you are interested in taking this on your own, please contact John Kovacs in the parish office.  If at least 4 people are interested, then a “home study” can be set up (where you won’t meet at the church, but will watch the videos on your own).
